Breed profile – Jack Russell Terrier

Jack Russell Terriers are amongst the most loved breeds in the world. It is probably due to the happy, bold and energetic nature of the breed that the Jack Russell Terriers have earned a great deal of admiration all across the globe. Apart from their cute and inquisitive look, their sense of loyalty, intelligence, ready-to-go nature and mind blowing working ability have put the name of the breed in the list of the most demanding dogs. Since the year 2000, there has been a growing confusion noticed with the breed. With the introduction of the Australian Jack Russell Terriers or Russell Terriers many people got trapped in the confusion whether the Australian Jack Russell Terriers and the Jack Russell Terriers are the same. As a matter of fact, the Jack Russell Terriers are very much different from what is known as the Australian Jack Russell Terriers or Russell Terriers. Many people consider that the Jack Russell Terriers are the same as the Parson Russell Terriers, although they are two different breed with different standards. Appearance of Jack Russell Terriers The Jack Russell Terriers are the working terriers with all the typical features and physical attributes of a perfect working terrier dog. Their happy, assertive, intelligent, bold and loyal natures make the dog the most lovable member of any family as well as for an owner who tend to use them as a working partner. They are always filled with energy. Their highly energetic nature makes the breed a perfect working terrier. The owners should use their working and energetic nature by making them fetching balls, chasing things, making the walk a long distance or long time normal trot. Habit of digging is quite normal with the breed, because these dogs have been bred to dig after quarry. The harsh part of the nature of the Jack Russell Terriers is that they can be very aggressive with the others dogs – not only the other breed, but also to other jack Russell Terriers too. Health Issue Alike the other breeds, Jack Russell Terriers are also afflicted to certain typical diseases. One of the most common forms of ailment that the Jack Russells are afflicted to is lens luxation that causes vision impairment. Lens luxation is actually displacement of the eye lens from the original site, resulting in increase of the intraocular pressure, ending up with glaucoma. This is an inherited disease that effects almost 90% of the Jack Russel Terriers. Legg-Perthes Disease, which is very much like hip dysplasia are also found to attack the breed. Official Recognition FCI has placed Jack Russell Terriers in Group 3 Section 1 #345. NZKC has placed Jack Russell Terriers in Terrier Group UKC has placed Jack Russell Terriers in Terrier Group ANKC has placed Jack Russell Terriers in Group 2 (Terriers) Not to be forgotten one is the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America – JRTCA.
