Considering the irresistible appeal of a Basset, that forces many people to buy it, Even before realizing its need in relation to surroundings and environment. It certainly helps if one has some ideas on the needs of a hound as robust as Basset hound before visiting the pet store as there are chances after seeing a Basset you may be compelled to buy it. Its unique appearance is arresting, attractive and dignified. Naturally Basset Hounds are well tempered, affectionate, sociable, friendly and loyal. Basset Hounds are robust Hounds that don’t require any special diet as an adult and if you are picking a Basset in its early days it can be very responsive to training. It’s a sensitive dog so all correction during training should be done with extreme care or else the basset is prone to become timid or shy. Also if not treated with considerable understanding it might become stubborn, willfully disobedient or non-cooperative. If treated and trained well there can be no better a canine companion than a Basset hound. It though does not need a vigorous exercise regimen on a daily basis it is always advisable to give it a fairly long walk daily to keep it in good health and mood. While getting a young pup one must assume that the pup is not stupid but understand that a hound’s memory is retentive but its intelligence is limited. The pup will therefore take little time in adapting so it’s unreasonable to expect from it to be responsive to the owner’s changing mood and has to be dealt in a consistent temperament. Some activities that look good when it’s a pup like tug and biting your dresses may be fun but be alert to avoid acts like these that can become a problem when the hound is adult. A pup that is supposed to live indoors or spend its life as a companion in a house should be taught house manners during its early days. Teaching house manners will not prove difficult if you can tackle with patience and determination. Pups always take meals at frequent intervals so its likely that they would try to relive themselves as frequently. Pups should be watched carefully so that they can be put in a place where you intend it to relive itself so that they get accustomed. After every meals, a considerable time of playing, when you see the pups going round etc. Look for these subtle symptoms and act accordingly. Don’t get frustrated with accidents, they are bound to happen. Pups might not relive them as soon as you put them there it might take a while wait with your pups and reward him once he is done. This will encourage it in anticipation of a reward for a job done to your satisfaction. Its impossible to guess right the exact time to teach your dog to be clean and obedient in your house but with determination and care every dog learns it pretty soon. Remember firmness coupled with affection will build up a bond of respect , confidence and faithfulness which will only grow with the years.
